Sydney Engineering Report

The Authority on Dirty Power & Flashing Lights.

Professional C-Bus diagnostics for Sydney's grid-related lighting issues.

The Science of the Flicker

In New South Wales, the electrical grid isn't just delivering 50Hz power; it is carrying a hidden "Ripple Control" signal. These Zellweger Tones (often 750Hz or 1050Hz) are injected by utility providers to trigger off-peak equipment.

When these tones meet a dimmed LED circuit on a C-Bus network, they create Interharmonic Distortion. Because a dimmer has already "thinned" the power wave, these pulses cause the LED driver to fluctuate rapidly. This is why your lights only seem to "shiver" at night or when dimmed—your system is literally reacting to the grid's control signals.

The $110 Fix

Our Flicker-Free LED Downlights utilize active filtering drivers. They are engineered specifically for the Sydney grid to ignore ripple frequencies while maintaining smooth dimming curves on C-Bus Universal Dimmers.

Whole-Home Scrubbing

For large-scale properties, we install Zellweger Ripple Filters at the main switchboard. This hardware "scrubs" the incoming power of all high-frequency interference before it enters your automation dimmers.

Zellweger & Ripple FAQ

The flicker coincides with when the grid operator sends "bursts" of ripple signals to switch off-peak hot water systems (often 8pm, 10pm, and 2am).
No, but the harmonic distortion causes excess heat in your C-Bus modules and LED drivers, which can lead to premature hardware failure if left uncorrected.
Only if that specific LED driver has a built-in ripple filter. Most consumer LEDs do not, which is why we utilize a specific range of Flicker-Free drivers.
